Highlights of 2017

The Fire Protection and Safety in Tunnels Conference not only focuses on pure opportunity, but on the steps the tunnelling industry has to take to protect both tunnel users and infrastructure. Each year we aim to create a comprehensive agenda, speaker line-up and audience to share ideas and inspire the innovations of the future and 2017 was no different.

The 2017 programme was kicked off with an interactive half-day workshop focusing on the construction challenges in developing tunnels. Chaired by noted fire safety leader, Dr. Tony Cash, International President, Rail Industry Fire Association, this series of masterclasses delved into the latest building issues and how best to advance tunnel development in line with latest regulatory standards. The half-day workshop was followed by a visit to the Arna Tunnel currently under construction between Bergen and Arna and gave attendees the chance to see a live development close up.

The core programme kicked off bright and early the next morning with an introduction from our conference chair Les Fielding, Tunnel Safety Officer, London Bridge Associates. Over the course of the next 2 days, attendees took part in a series of debates, presentations and round-tables debating the pressing challenges facing tunnel safety but also highlighting the examples of best practice from across the globe. Attendees heard about the Norwegian experience from Statens Vegvesen, best practice from the Austrian Tunnelling Association and latest updates from the Italian ANAS Government owned company. We learnt about the Amsterdam and Prague Metro operations who gave us insight on how they manage tunnel safety in bustling city centres, followed by a presentation from the Swedish City Line in Stockholm highlighting the latest development in their transformation of the cities underground lines.
