Inspired by the desert rose, a natural mineral formation created by salt evaporation in sand layers beneath the deserts of the Gulf region, the design by Jean Nouvel is an organically propagating series of interlocking disks, representative of petals that appear to grow out of the ground, each positioned at different angles that surround the structure, and of varying dimensions and curvatures, which form walls, ceilings, floors and terraces creating a ring of gallery spaces circling a central court.  The disks are made of steel truss structures assembled in a hub-and-spoke arrangement and are clad in glass fibre reinforced concrete panels. Deep disk-shaped sun-breaker elements filter incoming sunlight.

Judges’ comments include:

  • A truly stunning architectural piece resembling the desert rose
  • Created with natural mineral formation and salt evaporation
  • Incorporating sun-breakers filtering the incoming sunlight
  • This unique structure seems to grow out of the ground
