Interview with Paul Hardman of Nerudia

Paul is responsible for all scientific affairs at Nerudia, including understanding aerosol emissions from nicotine containing products and what affects the levels of emissions. He heads up Nerudia Science and is responsible for researching ENDS and e-liquids.

Following completion of his degree in Pharmacology, Paul gained experience at Vectura developing both generic and novel inhaled pharmaceutical products, before becoming QC Laboratory and Stability manager at Perrigo, where he ensured laboratory systems were compliant to the latest data integrity regulations.

1.            Throughout 2016, what are the key challenges facing e-cig/e-liquid companies?

The introduction of TPD in the European Union and FDA regulations in the USA have meant that brands have had to, and are still having to, carry out a vast amount of work in a short time to meet deadlines. This can also incur considerable cost, which can be prohibitive to smaller companies. There is also the challenge of growing the number of users, particularly in Europe where consumer advertising is now banned under TPD. 

2.            How can Nerudia help with these challenges?

3.            You have already confirmed to join the ‘Next Generation Nicotine Delivery conference’ for the 3rd year in a row; who are you hoping to meet with this year?

We are familiar with, and already work with, many of the speakers and attendees so it’s always good to catch up with the people that we know. We are also keen to meet up with anyone else who we can help and brands who are looking for a partner to help them grow.

4.            And, since the conference was launched in 2014, what changes have you witnessed across the industry?

There have been so many changes during this time – the most obvious of which is the introduction of regulation such as TPD and the FDA regulations in the US. Additionally, the market has grown exponentially over the past couple of years and also changed with the entry of big tobacco into the category. There have also been changes in the way that the scientific community view electronic cigarettes, with the Public Health England review of 2015 concluding that they are at least 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes. One thing we can be certain of is that there is still change to come, and we see innovation being the biggest driver of this in the upcoming months and years.
