The Future of Leasing in a Changing World

The leasing sector is entering a transformative period over the next five years, driven by technological advancements, the energy transition, and evolving market dynamics. Key challenges include adapting to new technologies, navigating the price gap between old and sustainable equipment, and managing regulatory constraints. As new assets like electric vehicles emerge, infrastructure adaptation and the absence of a second-hand market in some sectors present further hurdles.

Despite these challenges, significant opportunities exist. The increased demand for capital in the energy transition creates room for leasing providers to support SMEs with flexible, pay-per-use models and financing solutions tailored to asset usage. Agility, innovation, and a focus on sustainable finance will be critical to success. Collaboration with OEMs for joint product development and risk-sharing incentives can help meet changing market needs.

By staying ahead of technological advancements and embracing sustainability, leasing providers can position themselves for long-term growth and capitalize on evolving customer demands.

2025 marks a major deadline for asset funders, as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will see 50,000 companies reporting on Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions. While ESG presents a significant growth opportunity for lenders, changing regulations can result in challenges around data collection, emission calculations and long-term portfolio management. Now is the time for asset finance companies to start considering how they can capture their market share, while also ensuring compliance.

Ivan Bagaliyski, Director, Strategy and ESG Value Proposition, will discuss the importance of planning a strategy now to operationalise ESG within asset finance lenders’ existing workflows to promote growth opportunities.
