Liam Vass

Liam is a Project Officer at Transport Canada’s Innovation Centre, Rail and Aviation Research, Development, and Deployment (RD&D) group. Liam manages projects related to alternative fuel technologies in rail, as well as those aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change in the railway environment.

Liam has been supporting the development of hydrogen and battery locomotive codes and standards in North America. He is currently working with CSA Group to revise existing CSA TS-601 (Hydrogen fuel cell locomotive) and 602 (Onboard lithium-ion battery locomotive) technical specifications. These specifications were initially published in the 2022/2023 fiscal year but have been opened again to investigate newly-identified risk scenarios, including operation in tunnels, battery crashworthiness, and shock and vibration. The next editions of the specifications will also look to incorporate new data and information from active hydrogen technology trials in North America, and ensure alignment with emerging international standards.

On the climate change adaptation side, Liam has supported projects aimed at reducing wildfire risk impacts to railways in Canada. He is currently involved in drafting a wildfire best practice guide for monitoring and managing risks to railways. Additionally, Liam manages a railway fire risk task team which provides an open forum between government and North American railway companies to share updates from their current and planned wildfire mitigation projects, discuss railway fire management plans, and identify opportunities for collaboration.
