Dr. Reto Cueni

Reto Cueni joined Vontobel Asset Management in 2014 as a Senior Economist. In 2020, he was appointed Chief Economist. He focuses on longer-term topics to support Vontobel’s positioning as a thought leader and to shape the company’s strategic asset allocation principles.

Prior to joining Vontobel Asset Management, from 2009 to 2014, he worked as an empirical researcher and lecturer at the Economics Department of the University of Zurich. Today still he is a guest lecturer at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). He started his career in 2006 as a quantitative analyst in Equity Research at Vontobel Investment Banking.

Reto studied at the University of Zurich, at Universita degli Studi in Siena, and at the Columbia University in New York. He holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in Economics from the University of Zurich.

Dr. Burkhard P. Varnholt

Burkhard is the former Global Chief Investment Officer at Credit Suisse and currently Head of Investments at
Credit Suisse, a UBS Group Company. He has about 30 years of investment experience and advises large
investors around the globe. Burkhard is a regular public speaker, author of books and publishes regular market
commentaries.
Burkhard earned a doctorate in Economics at the University of St. Gallen and was awarded an honorary doctorate
(Dr. h.c.) in International Relations from the Geneva School of Diplomacy.
In 2004, Burkhard founded the children-charity ‘Kids of Africa’, which runs a village for homeless children in
Uganda (www.kids-of-africa.com). In 2006, he was awarded the Swiss Re Civilian Services Prize. Burkhard used
to serve on the Tate Modern Acquisition committee and currently acts as a trustee to the board of the Museum
Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich as well as friends of the Kunsthaus Zurich.
